Jesse and Ruby – 2.5 years – from Joanne

The pregnancy

Yes normal

The birth

I had a planned c-section at 37 weeks and 4 days.

Ruby came first she weighed 6.13lb and Jesse came 2 mins later weighing 6.6lb

All were well and came home after 2 nights.

Feeding

Both bottle formula fed, we did have all sorts of feeding issues but struggling to remember them all, we swapped formulas a number of times finally settled with Kendamill – after 12 months they went on to full fat cow’s milk.

History after birth to present day

Our two older boys are the most terrible eaters, and I was determined to not go down the same route with the twins. I did a mixture of traditional weaning and baby lead weaning giving the babies a wide variety of food including fruit and veg. This was going well but we started major building works. The babies were sleeping in our room still not through the night and that period is such a blur and we now find ourselves stuck in a rut, only giving them food that we know they will eat.

They eat very little fruit and veg in fact no fruit at all and I’m sure this is the reason behind Ruby’s bowel problems.

She struggles to do a poo and in the past the poo has been very hard containing blood.

They are both currently on Cosmacol paediatric powers and occasionally Ruby has Lactulose. The foods they don’t eat that we would very much like them to are fruits and veg (they only eat peas and corn), pasta, jacket potatoes, sandwiches and rice.

Current 24 hour schedule

They sleep in separate rooms, and we generally wake them up at 7am and they have a bottle of milk (Ruby is obsessed with milk) unless they have had it during the night/early morning.

They have breakfast at 8am, this can vary from a good full portion of Weetabix or porridge to a few bits of dried cereal.

Lunch around 12, then a sleep from 1pm until 3pm – sometimes having to wake them up.

Dinner is at 5pm.

We take them up for a bath around 6pm, they have a lovely bath together that they enjoy very much then on to our bed with a bottle of milk, one with me one with David.

After a story and PJs they go into their separate room wide awake with their bottles, dummies and muzzies.  We never hear from them after this, Jesse can talk/sing to himself for an hour or so and drops off to sleep and Ruby falls asleep straight away.

When David comes to bed he brings up two bottles of milk and if they wake up during the night we literally pass them the milk and don’t hear from them again until we go back in. 7am.

We have started massively watering the milk down and thinking about this week, most nights they have both slept right through. They wake up very happy and three days a week they go to nursery, Jesse has a lunchtime sleep there but Ruby doesn’t. In this last week we have reduced snacks and they have been eating more at mealtimes. We have recently changed to semi skimmed milk also.

Sleep associations

They both go to bed with their dummies and muzzies, they like a bit of Bonjela on the dummy.  They both had a monitor with music.  I remember with the older boys having to rock them, pat their bums and not being able to go out the room until they were asleep, in comparison the twins are fantastic with the sleeping.

Family background

None

Expectations/questions

Our main complaint would be the variety of food that they eat. They don’t sit nicely at the table, always getting up every five mins. I understand that they aren’t always hungry because of all the milk they are drinking but I have seen a huge improvement in this since we started reducing the milk and snacks.

We would like to try and get rid of the bottles for the water and ideally get them off the poo medications. Jesse was prescribed it but doesn’t need it as much as Ruby does. I know a better diet with more fruit & veg would improve all of this. I look forward to being able to take them out to any restaurant not just the ones that have fish fingers. I want them to enjoy a wide variety of food unlike my big boys.

Thanks so much xxx
