Mexx Bryan – 2 years, 3 months – from Brooke

I had no problems within pregnancy with Mexx, I did however go 2 weeks over. After 2 sweeps & help I went into Hospital; they induced me and after 10 hours of contractions they had to break my waters. I had an epidural within labour. I ended up having a c- section, Mexx was trying to travel down the birth canal but wasn’t succeeding and instead inflamed my cervix which caused loss of blood and worry to us both.  The c – section was calm and even though it wasn’t planned I wouldn’t say it was an emergency running down the corridor.

He was then delivered and completely healthy. I didn’t breastfeed & he had a little bit of colic here and there. He then went on to weaning with food we were having & also Ella’s kitchen pouches. Coming up to 10/11 month he was pretty much having normal food as full meals and not just snacking.

His sleeping was amazing. He would go down at 7 and wake at 7, he was so textbook, his naps and day to day routine was amazing and I pretty much knew what was coming each day. With lockdown that definitely helped us getting him into a routine but also self-soothing. The first time I felt a shift in his sleeping pattern was the first time the clocks went back or forward. I can’t remember which but it really threw him off his routine and has never slept past 7 since.

He then went to nursery, he started napping when their “class” napped which was 10am he would then maybe have a sleep after lunch. Then as he’s got older he’s dropped the sleep and now he will have a sleep within the hours of 12-3.30. Sometimes he sleeps for an hour, other times 2! With him waking so early at the moment too (any time between 5.00-6.30) I feel like for his mood and behaviour waking him up is not an option. Now I’ve had my younger little boy, routines have slipped and I’ve struggled on the get go to get them both sleeping but also having a good bedtime routine as sometimes their dad works away from home in the evenings.

Mexx’s problem now as well as his early wake ups is that we’ve now found ourselves in the habit of kicking up a fuss at bedtime and in and out of bed. I changed Mexx from a cot to a bed around the age of Mexx being 2/2-3 months. The reason being was he once jumped out of his cot whilst he was crying at bedtime one night. I then removed the sides so that option of rebelling wasn’t there.

Mexx’s routine differs from the days he’s in nursery and days he’s with me.

Nursery days

5.00-6.30 – wake up
7.00-8.00 – getting dressed, light breakfast
8.30-4.30pm – nursery.
Inc breakfast if he would like more. Snacks around 10, lunch around 12 followed by a sleep again depending on how long today for instance he slept for 1.45hours at nursery.

Had dinner at 4.00pm and dessert then came home.

Then we start bath at 6.15 with his little brother then he will come down and watch his programs for around 30mins. This has been a new thing within the last month mainly again because bedtimes hard to juggle if alone but also I feel him going bed with his little brother may be too early.

Bedtime is just dreadful, sometimes he can just accept what you’re saying and go to sleep but most of the time he’s up and down messing which can also cause the waking of his little brother.

Mexx works well to praise so I know with the right praise and structure he will work well, hopefully within a new bedtime routine.
